Wellbeing Award for School

Summerfield is working towards achieving the Wellbeing Award for Schools which will consolidate the work we have consistently been doing to support mental health and emotional wellbeing in our school.

We have aimed to create a whole school approach promoting emotional wellbeing and positive mental health across the whole school community which is at the heart of the culture and ethos of our school. All pupils, parents and school staff are part of this approach and contribute towards a healthy understanding of the importance of emotional health.  Our hope is to build confidence where every person involved flourishes in their thinking and learning around mental health.

Our vision is a community where children, families and staff are supported effectively to build on their strengths and to achieve their goals in life.  We will continue to promote resilience and wellbeing to make a difference to people’s lives.

At Summerfield, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of all of our pupils. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times anyone may need additional emotional support.  We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.

 

At our school, we:

Help children to understand their emotions and feelings better

Help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries

Help children socially to form and maintain relationships

Promote self-esteem and ensure children know that they count

Encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’

Help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

We promote resilience, respect and responsibility

We offer different levels of support:

 

Universal support – To meet the needs of all of our pupils through our overall ethos and our curriculum. 

Additional support – For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement and difficult circumstances outside school

Targeted support – For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as Drawing and Talking. Referrals to outside agencies e.g. Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

 

Tools we use to identify and support:

Wellbeing questionnaires will be delivered annually to staff, pupils and parents.  Outcomes from this will develop an action plan which will be reviewed termly. The Boxall profile is used for children who are of concern and the outcomes are used to plan intervention support.  All wellbeing interventions are discussed with parents and consent agreed before being delivered to pupils.

MindEdwww.minded.org.ukprovides free completely open access, online education available on tablets, phones or computers. Bite-sized chunks of e-learning to help adults to support wellbeing and identify, understand and support children and young people with mental health issues.

 

Young Mindswww.youngminds.org.uk provides a range of support to help parents with specific mental health conditions and life events which might be negatively effecting their wellbeing.

 

Anna Freud Centrewww.annafreud.org/ provides resources and support for parents to help with their children’s mental health

 

The Incredible Years parenting programme - https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/children-young-people-families/early-help/strengthening-families/the-incredible-years-parenting-programme - This programme has a strong focus on developing the parent and child's positive relationship along with looking at behaviour strategies.

 

Charlie Waller Memorial Trust - https://www.cwmt.org.uk/about-us This trust was set up to educate young people on the importance of staying mentally well and how to do so. Support and resources are available.
