AUTUMN (1) 2021
Lion Class have been Lost in the Jungle for Autumn half term. Actually it was the Rainforest!
In Geography we learnt why the Rainforest is a valuable biome for the Earth. We located the tropics, the equator and learnt a song about the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We understood the rainforest provided oxygen for the whole planet and that the wonderful flora and fauna needs protection from logging and cattle farming. We identified the rainforest friendly alliance badge.
In Art we printed, shaded and mixed shades and tones of green. We collaged a large picture of the rainforest using mixed media to demonstrate the layers of the rainforest and the birds and animals it provides a home for.
In English we wrote an innovated story based on Augustus and his Smile and The Monkey Puzzle. We read Lost in the Jungle by Charlie Small in our class story. We used expanded noun phrases and exciting verbs. We wrote poems asking for us all to Save the Rainforest. We used repetition and powerful imagery to get our message across. We learnt spelling rules and practiced joining our hand writing.
In Music we kept in time with a steady beat, clapped back rhythms accurately and learnt songs in the Rand B style and the Beatles.
In Science we studied plants. We germinated and planted runner beans and we understood the life cycle of a plant, including pollination and seed dispersal. We learnt about the bee dance and we made helicopter seeds to be dispersed by the wind. We asked questions about fair tests and experimented with food colouring to demonstrate transportation of water through the stem of plants.
In Maths we understood place value, ones, tens and hundreds, we ordered numbers and using base ten and rekenreks to build numbers. We added 3 digit numbers, crossing tens. We understood how to exchange and to record our solutions.
In computing we learnt to code and debug computing games.
In Jigsaw, Being Me, we discussed our ideas about a dream or nightmare school and understood the value of rules to keep us safe.
In German we learnt how to greet others.
