Summerfield School

Year 3

SPRING (1) 2022

What an absolutely ‘Bananas’ Half term we had in Year 3. We have been working on our Topic ‘Flying Food Airways.’ It is a geography topic and we have compared the UK with Costa Rica. (To understand the difference between imported and local food)

We researched how bananas go from plantations in Costa Rica all the way to our Local Supermarkets in Milton Keynes. We wrote a recount of the journey as well as researching the airmiles and climate that the bananas need to grow. We learnt how local food in season can be a really healthy option, then we designed and made a healthy wrap using local and imported vegetables. We also started off our Topic with an absolutely beautiful supper with the most amazing dishes from around the world supplied by our wonderful parents (SO Thank you all so much!)

We tasted fresh local cabbage from the UK and fresh navel oranges from Seville in Spain. We prepared and cooked Red cabbage pickle and Orange marmalade and explained that we can preserve fresh food. We measured 800 grams of sugar to add to the marmalade. We discussed the pros and cons of local and imported food. We located Seville in Spain and Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom (UK).

We enjoyed exploring the Atlas and finding out and comparing Costa Rica to here in the UK. As part of this topic we also designed, created and made a Healthy Recipe card to make a healthy wrap. We used multimedia including photography to design our front covers and wrote our very own unique instructions using our best handwriting.

In Science we learnt that magnetism is a natural force, that magnets have a North and South pole which repel and attract. We carried out experiments to test which materials were magnetic and non-magnetic.

In Maths we have multiplied and divided 2 digit numbers and 1 digit numbers using different methods, including partitioning, base ten, place value grid and short multiplication.
