Beyond Britain

During this topic we have been learning about the Mayan civilisation, exploring the different aspects of social and religious history. During our immersion day we learnt about the game Pok-ta-Pok and had a tournament in our class. The game is very different to the sports we have today as you do not use your hands or feet, you use your hips and elbows instead.

In our English lessons, we read a text called The Hero Twins. In this graphic novel, a set of twins are set challenges by the Gods and competed in games of Pok-ta-Pok. From this we created our own version of part of this text.

During DT lessons we cooked a variety of dishes, using the Mayan culture as a focus. We made our own salsa, guacamole, tortillas and chocolate truffles. We put our computing skills to the test to research and create a presentation that we planned to showcase our learning from the topic.

In our science lessons we learnt about how humans change over time. This involved changes when growing, ageing and how babies develop during pregnancy. We were amazed at the sizes of a baby during a gestation period, and we looked at actual objects to understand this.

We were also fortunate enough to visit MK Theatre and have a tour of the site. We had a sneaky peak backstage to see how the props and costumes for a production are stored and assembled. We ended the tour with a conversation with the Head of Theatre and the production manager of the team on site at the time.
